Message-Oriented Middleware

Message-oriented middleware is built for an application-to-middleware interoperability model. Applications make requests for compute resources by passing messages directly to the middleware. To address system failure, MOM guarantees message delivery. Messages are records calling for action and supplying the input needed by that action. MOM inherently supports an event-driven mode of processing; it can support a publish/subscribe mode where an event causes a push to other applications. Communication may be synchronous or asynchronous, in which case the requesting application would continue processing and not wait for the response to its request.

In various combinations with other application deployment software products, MOM software performs one or more of the following functions in the logical middle tier of a distributed multiple-tiered environment of clients, back-end applications code, content, and data sources:

• Front-end concentration and message brokering
• Freestanding enterprise service buses
• Representative vendors and products include the following:
• Fiorano MQ
• IBM WebSphere MQSeries and WebSphere ESB
• Progress Software Sonic Enterprise Service Bus (SonicMQ if sold freestanding)
• TIBCO Enterprise Messaging Server
